Stallion Nimmerdor

This legendary bay stallion Nimmerdor was out of the Dutch WB  mare Ramonaa . She in turn featured the thoroughbred Koridon on her sire's side and Dutch warmblood Senator on her dam's side.

Nimmedor's sire was the Holstein stallion Farn , an old fashioned type who , it was hoped when he was graded , would improve the Dutch breed by siring high quality daughters . Farn clearly did achieve this but only after being given lighter weight mares did it become evident that he was also capable of producing excellent show jumping horses amongst his offspring. Through Farn , Nimmerdor was therefore able to trace his ancestry back to Achil --- founder of the Holstein breed. It is indisputable the tremendous influence Farn had upon Dutch breeding and several years later after his death , he was declared a ' preferant ' , which is the highest award for stallion recognition. Farn sired any number of International Show Jumping Horses but Nimmerdor remains his most famous son of all.

Nimmerdor was foaled in 1972 by a Mr. Dijkstar of Woudend and was bought at a stallion show by a Mr. Wiepke van de Lagewag.  Nimmerdor was neither approved at the time of the show nor was he vetted . This however did not deter the new prospective owner from parting with 25,000 guilders because it was felt that there was something special about  Nimmerdor. The new owner had originally only started breeding horses in 1972 as a hobby and may possibly have seen Nimmerdor as a stallion which could take his venture to a higher level. Whether that was the intention or not , it certainly proved to be the case as the VDL stud was only really  born after the purchase of Nimmerdor.

The jumping abilities of Nimmerdor became very apparent during his performance testing and so over a number of years he progressed onto the International stage. He successfully competed in many World Cups and other such International competitions. He was invited to compete at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics but the invitation was declined in favour of concentration upon his breeding duties.

Nimmerdor's first ever offspring was a mare called Samantha , Keur Preferant Prestatie.    Nimmerdor now has numerous children including over 50 approved sons of which one ,  Ahorn ( the grand sire of our own Greenacres Hajla Z ) is featured elsewhere on this site. Approved sons aside , he also produced over sixty international show jumpers including well known horses such as VDL  Everest and  Canadian Colours. Without a doubt , Nimmerdor was one of the best show - jumper sires in the world but according to the VDL he was a touch discerning when it came to his women and he " didn't want to do it with every mare " .  He was also a very intelligent animal and very playful and liked to bite people who came to see him !

Nimmerdor also produced a number of successful dressage horses including the international Zapata as well as other versatile offspring including Wellington which competed at advanced level dressage as well as International Show Jumping. He was therefore a very attractive proposition for breeders who were aiming for an all - round sport horse. He also sired many exceptional broodmares and his daughters regularly finished above all other mares in the conformation category. Indeed Zancara ( keur pref ) was reserve champion for ridden broodmares in the Netherlands and was several times champion of Friesland at the Central KWPN show. His progeny also have excellent breeding results and he had a high degree of heredity reliability , standing at 95% .

Nimmerdor passed away at the VDL stud in his sleep on 25th April 2003 at the age of 31 and was the KWPN Stallion of the 20th Century . There are only a few straws left which would have cost 2,000 euros each , but understandably the VDF stud will be using them upon their own mares only.

Combining all of the above , it is no surprise that this preferant stallion was approved by the majority of sport horse and breed societies . Even now his stature through his descendants is still growing and his influence on breeding is far - reaching .
